Two Indian Institutions Named Among World-Renowned Institutions for AI Fellowship Programme

Bangalore, Nov 14 (Alayaran.com) - The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) India have been selected among a prestigious group of worldwide institutions to participate in a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Science Global Fellowship Programme by Imperial College London.

The two-year fellowship programme, supported by a generous funding from philanthropic organisation Schmidt Sciences, aims to enable talented researchers from countries of the Global South to enhance their scientific research with cutting-edge AI. The winners will spend one year at Imperial College London and the subsequent year back in their home institutions.

This ambitious initiative seeks to build sustained local capacity for AI in science and foster innovation faster than ever before. Professor Abhishek Kumar Singh, Chair of the Office of International Relations at IISc, welcomed the opportunity, saying, "The I-X Centre for AI in Science Global Fellowship programme provides a unique chance to train leading researchers in AI, which has transformative power."

NCBS India, with its institution-wide capability to apply AI methods to gain deeper understanding of biological systems, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. Director Professor L S Shashidhara noted that developing in-house AI capacity would enhance their ability to generate new knowledge and improve collaboration with Imperial.

The other institutions chosen for this prestigious programme include African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, University of Ghana, University of Sao Paulo, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. These research-intensive institutions have existing links with Imperial through various collaborations and are committed to being leaders in AI applications.

Imperial College London President Professor Hugh Brady highlighted the importance of global collaboration to address global challenges. "The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI for Science Programme's generous funding will support three cohorts of fellows on this two-year programme, advancing their research, collaborating on interdisciplinary projects, and building research capacity in their home institutions."

This new fellowship programme is expected to strengthen collaborations with universities in the Global South, reaffirming Imperial's commitment to international research and innovation partnerships.

The beneficiaries of this esteemed fellowship will benefit from a collaborative environment, working alongside leading researchers and having opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research conducted by the I-X community.
