PM Modi Launched 'One Nation One Subscription' Scheme to Enhance Research Access

New Delhi, January 1, 2025 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Union Cabinet formally launched the ambitious "One Nation One Subscription" (ONOS) initiative today, marking a significant shift in the country's approach to academic research and scholarly publications. The new Central Sector Scheme aims to provide unified access to scientific content for students and professionals across India.

As part of the launch, ONOS offers a digital subscription service that will enable millions of Indians to access high-quality research articles, journal publications, and other scholarly content at an affordable rate. The scheme is being implemented by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), an independent inter-university center under the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The ONOS scheme has been allocated a budget of Rs 6,000 crore for the next three calendar years. This financial allocation will support the expansion and deepening of various education-related initiatives undertaken by the government over the past decade.

According to sources, the One Nation One Subscription is expected to benefit nearly 1.8 crore students, staff, and researchers from over 6,300 institutions across India. The scheme aligns with the objectives of several high-profile policy initiatives, including the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and Viksitbharat@2047.

Under the ONOS program, libraries and research institutions will be able to access a vast repository of scholarly content, increasing the reach and impact of research produced in India. With this initiative, the government aims to foster an innovative and research-oriented culture across the country's educational institutions and R&D labs.

As part of its monitoring mechanism, ANRF will regularly review institutional usage of the ONOS scheme and track the publications by Indian authors from participating institutions. By doing so, the organization seeks to ensure that the benefits of this new initiative reach their full potential in advancing research and scholarship in India.

The launch of One Nation One Subscription marks a significant milestone in the government's efforts to enhance the nation's research capabilities and promote knowledge sharing across academia and industry.
