NIO Goa Hosts Ninth SOLAS Open Science Conference

Panaji: The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa is set to host the ninth Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) Open Science Conference from November 11 to 14, marking the first time this prestigious international event is being held in India.
SOLAS, a global network of multidisciplinary scientists, organizes these conferences biennially to explore the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere, focusing on how these interactions influence climate, weather, and marine ecosystems.
The conference will commence with an inaugural session at 8:30 AM on November 11 at the NIO auditorium in Dona Paula, Goa. Following the opening, participants will engage in three discussion sessions aimed at fostering roundtable dialogues on SOLAS-related research and encouraging collaborative efforts among scientists from around the world.
In addition to the scientific sessions, SOLAS is preparing to introduce a mentorship program in mid-2025, designed to bridge the gap between early career scientists (ECS) and established researchers. An open session at the OSC will be dedicated to collecting feedback to refine the structure and objectives of this upcoming initiative.
This event not only underscores the importance of ocean-atmosphere interactions in global environmental studies but also highlights India's growing role in international scientific research.
