New Online Master's Program in Data Science Launched by University
University City - The University's Data Science Institute (DSI), in collaboration with the School of Professional Studies, has announced the launch of a new online master's degree program focusing on the intersection of data science, policy, and governance. This innovative 16-month program is designed to start in September 2025 and will explore not only the technical aspects of data science but also its broader societal implications.
The curriculum, consisting of eight courses and culminating in a capstone project, addresses critical ethical issues such as data privacy and algorithmic biases, which are increasingly relevant in the era of advanced artificial intelligence.
Linda Clark, Senior Lecturer in Data Science and Director of Undergraduate Studies at DSI, played a key role in developing the program. "This new online offering aims to complement our existing in-person master’s program by offering flexibility and accessibility," Clark stated.
The program is structured to allow students to engage in real-time discussions with peers and faculty, while also accommodating self-paced learning. This approach aims to cater to the diverse needs of students, enabling them to learn on their own schedules.
Professor Suresh Venkatasubramanian, Interim Director of DSI, highlighted the timeliness of the program. "With the world's growing fascination with AI, understanding how to deploy these technologies responsibly is paramount," he explained. "Our program focuses on AI governance, ensuring that AI systems are aligned with societal values and goals."
This new initiative expands the University's suite of data science education offerings, which already includes an undergraduate certificate in data fluency, a fifth-year master’s degree, and a concurrent certificate for PhD students. The online format now allows students from around the globe to access this specialized training.
The University anticipates that this program will attract students interested in shaping the future of technology in policy, governance, and ethical AI deployment. Applications for the inaugural class will open soon, with further details available on the University's website.
