Local Professor Honored for Work in Promoting Diversity in Science

St. Louis, MO - Washington University School of Medicine's head of biochemistry and molecular biophysics department, Dr. Benjamin Garcia, has been selected to receive the 2024 American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award.

Garcia was born and raised in Southern California as a self-proclaimed 'slightly above average student', but did not discover his passion for chemistry until midway through college. After earning a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Virginia in 2005, Garcia became determined to use his knowledge to promote diversity in science.

As a professor, Garcia's research focuses on quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics, particularly epigenetic mechanisms. However, it is not just Dr. Garcia's work that has garnered recognition, but also his commitment to increasing diversity among scientists and students in historically marginalized groups.

The ASBMB Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award recognizes individuals who have worked tirelessly to break down barriers against underrepresented groups in science. Dr. Garcia's resolve to promote diversity stems from personal experiences as a Hispanic student who struggled to see representation in science courses and research opportunities.

"Growing up, I never saw many Hispanic scientists around me, which made me wonder if this was the field for me," Dr. Garcia explained. "But attending events like SACNAS conferences, seeing so many Hispanic scientists that looked like me, it was incredibly motivating."

Since establishing himself as a professor at Washington University, Dr. Garcia has established various initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in science. These include starting a summer undergraduate research program for underrepresented minority students, organizing workshops to support faculty who mentor diverse trainees, and helping to establish a mass spectrometry special interest group specifically for Hispanic and Latinx scientists.

Dr. Francisco Sarmiento, his Ph.D. student, wrote about Dr. Garcia's efforts, stating: "His approachable, comprehensive mentoring has made a huge difference in the lives of many students, including myself."

The ASBMB Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award nomination came as no surprise to those who know Dr. Garcia, who is widely regarded as a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in science. His commitment to increasing representation and opportunities for underrepresented groups will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of scientists.

The 2024 ASBMB Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award was presented to Dr. Benjamin Garcia at the Society's annual meeting.
