India's Space Research Organisation Achieves Multifold Returns on Every Rupee Spent

Bangalore, India - Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath said that for every rupee spent by the organisation, it obtains a return of Rs 2.50, highlighting its efficiency and impact on society.

Speaking at an event organised by the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society, S Somanath emphasized that ISRO's goal is not to compete with other nations but to serve the country through its space exploration initiatives.

The recent study conducted by ISRO revealed that for every rupee invested, the organisation receives a return of 2.50 times that amount. This indicates the effectiveness and efficiency of ISRO in achieving its objectives.

S Somanath stressed the need for creating an ecosystem of business opportunities to sustain ISRO's growth. "Going to space is a costly affair, and we cannot rely solely on government funding," he said. "We must create our own sources of income to maintain the organisation's momentum."

In addition to its well-known space exploration ventures, ISRO also provides advisory services that have direct benefits for society. For instance, using the Oceansat satellite, the organisation issues advisories to fishermen which enable them to secure better catches and save diesel substantially.

Recalling his schooldays, S Somanath attributed his journey towards pursuing an engineering degree at IIT to a teacher who encouraged him to explore the world of science and technology.

ISRO's history was also highlighted as S Somanath reminisced about the launch of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in the 1990s. Initially, the project faced significant challenges and setbacks, but ISRO managed to rectify issues within a short span of ten months and successfully relaunched it.

Over 2 lakh students and teachers from Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society participated in the event, with many even joining remotely through Zoom technology.
