India Marks milestone with historic three-nation tour as PM Modi visits Guyana after over 50 years

In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a monumental three-nation tour that included a landmark visit to Guyana, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has set foot in the South American nation in half a century.

The tour, which began in Nigeria, was followed by participation in the 19th G20 Summit in Brazil. The summit provided a platform for critical discussions between nations on global issues.

However, the highlight of PM Modi's trip came when he arrived at Georgetown, Guyana, marking his country's first visit to the nation in over five decades. The historic visit was a significant milestone as India sought to strengthen its ties with Guyana and explore avenues of cooperation in various sectors such as trade, technology, healthcare, and education.

During his time in Guyana, PM Modi co-chaired the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, engaging in discussions with leaders from the Caribbean region. These talks focused on identifying new areas for mutual cooperation, thereby bolstering bilateral relations between India and CARICOM nations.

The Prime Minister also held bilateral meetings with Suriname president Chandrikapersad 'Chan' Santokhi, Grenada's prime minister, Antigua and Barbuda's high commissioner, and Trinidad and Tobago's deputy prime minister. These discussions explored ongoing partnerships while examining possibilities for further collaboration.

PM Modi also undertook cultural engagements during his visit to Guyana. He visited the Saraswati Vidya Niketan Secondary School in Georgetown where he interacted with students who welcomed him with traditional Indian performances. The Prime Minister applauded efforts by the school to promote India's values and holistic education.

During his visit, PM Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at a statue in Promenade Gardens, underscoring India's enduring commitment to peace and non-violence.

The journey concluded with a dinner reception hosted by Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, which featured vibrant performances by the Guyanese community. The event highlighted strong ties between the nation and PM Modi's country.
