Goa Hosts International SOLAS Conference, Aims to Foster Ocean-Atmosphere Research
Panaji, November 10, 2023 - The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa is set to host the 9th Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) Open Science Conference from November 11 to 14, marking the first time this prestigious event is held in India.
SOLAS, a global network of multidisciplinary scientists, convenes these conferences biennially to deliberate on the latest advancements in the study of interactions between the ocean and the lower atmosphere. The conference will commence with an inaugural session at 8:30 AM on November 11 at the NIO auditorium in Dona Paula, Goa.
The event will feature three discussion sessions following the opening ceremony, designed to encourage roundtable discussions on topics pertinent to SOLAS, with the goal of enhancing collaborations and pushing forward research initiatives.
In a significant move to support the next generation of researchers, SOLAS is preparing to launch a mentorship program in mid-2025. This initiative aims to pair early career scientists (ECS) with seasoned experts in various scientific disciplines. An open session during the conference will be dedicated to gathering insights and feedback to refine the structure and rollout of this mentorship program.
This conference not only underscores India's growing role in international scientific research but also serves as a platform for fostering global scientific collaboration in understanding and addressing the complex dynamics between the ocean and the atmosphere.
