Zomato Launches District App to Tackle Competition in Online Ticketing Market

Mumbai, December 1, - In a move to consolidate its food delivery and quick-commerce businesses under one platform, Zomato has launched an app called District for its 'going-out' business, competing head-on with market leaders like BookMyShow. The new app is now available on both iOS and Android devices, offering users a dedicated space to book tickets for movies, live performances, sports events, shopping, staycations, and more.

This move by Zomato marks its third consumer-facing venture after its flagship food delivery platform and quick-commerce platform Blinkit. Initially, District aims to enable users to book movie tickets and live event passes, marking a significant entry into the competitive online ticketing market in India.

The move is seen as an attempt to strengthen Zomato's position in this space, following its acquisition of Paytm's entertainment business, Insider, worth ₹2,048 crore last month. India’s movie ticketing segment is dominated by BookMyShow, which holds a 60% market share. With District, Zomato looks set to challenge BookMyShow's dominance.

Zomato reported a net profit for the fifth quarter in a row, reporting ₹176 crore for the three-month period ending September 2023. The company also saw an increase of 69% in revenue on an adjusted basis compared to the same period last year, rising to ₹4,799 crore.
