Zomato Launches District App: Aggregator Expands Going-Out Business

Bangalore, India - Zomato, a leading food aggregator, has launched its maiden going-out app District, catering to the growing demand for experiential services such as dining, entertainment, and ticketing. The app is now available on both iOS and Android platforms.

District consolidates Zomato's various "going-out" businesses under one roof, offering users a seamless experience when it comes to booking tickets for movies, live events, shopping, staycations, and more. The platform aims to bridge the gap between consumers and entertainment venues, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Initially, District focuses on movie ticketing, but the plan is to expand its services as the app gains traction. Zomato has been gradually expanding its presence in the going-out market by strengthening its dining and quick-commerce platforms -- Blinkit and Zomato Live.

This new venture marks Zomato's third major foray into consumer-facing services after its flagship food delivery app and Blinkit, which is a fast commerce platform that focuses on instant shopping. The company has positioned itself at the forefront of this space with strategic acquisitions and innovative ideas.

Interestingly, District enters a highly competitive online market dominated by existing players like MakeMyTrip, BookMyShow, and others who control a 60% market share in India's movie ticketing segment. In a move to strengthen its position, Zomato had made a significant acquisition -- Paytm's entertainment business, Insider – valued at ₹2,048 crore (approximately $270 million) last August.

The company reported consistent growth in the first quarter, posting a net profit for the fifth consecutive time during the three-month period ending September. It earned ₹176 crore as its net profit for July-September, while adjusted revenue surged by 69% compared to the same period last year. For adjusted basis, the total revenue reached ₹4,799 crore.

Through District, Zomato aims to diversify its offerings and carve a niche for itself in the growing Indian market.
