World Chess Championship 2024: D Gukesh Not Thinking About Ding Liren's Form, Says 'Pretty Clear Who I'm Going To Face'

Indian Teenager D Gukesh on Monday expressed his confidence ahead of the upcoming 2024 FIDE World Championship match against reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China. The 18-year-old Indian took to social media to address the doubts over his chances against the Chinese player, saying that for him, it's "pretty clear who I'm going to face".

Gukesh's comments come after Ding Liren said he is at peace ahead of their match, which begins from November 23 to December 13. In a press conference earlier on Saturday, Ding Liren stated that he is feeling less nervous this time round, unlike when he was the challenger.

However, Gukesh expressed his gratitude for being part of the world championship event and has been looking forward to it since his early days as a chess player. He acknowledged that there are nerves but feels good about it and wants to give his best.

Gukesh's confidence in his abilities can be attributed to his recent performances where he annexed the Candidates' title earlier this April, which qualified him for this match. The 18-year-old Indian has risen to number 5 in the World rankings.

The 2024 FIDE World Championship match marks an interesting contrast as Gukesh is considered the overwhelming favourite against Ding Liren who has slipped to number 23 in world rankings following a string of below-average performances.

"We are playing against Ding Liren who is one of the best players in the world for over a decade," said Gukesh. "My job is clear - just play my best chess and let the outcome take care of itself."

"Obviously, it’s not the first time I’ve played against someone older like this. When I last faced Nepo (Ian Nepomniachtchi), he was older than me but I managed to give him a run for his money," said Ding Liren.

The duo will clash over 14 Classical games with the player who crosses the 7.5 points marker first declared the winner in the USD 2.5 million championship.
