WhatsApp to Stop Working on Older Android Devices by January 1st, 2025
In a move that is set to impact millions of users worldwide, WhatsApp has announced that it will stop working on devices running older versions of Android operating system by the end of next year.
According to reports, WhatsApp will no longer receive updates or support for smartphones that do not meet its minimum software requirements, which are currently running Android 5.1 (Lollipop) or higher. This means that users running on devices with lower Android versions will face restrictions and eventually face complete discontinuation of the service by January 1st, 2025.
The decision was made to ensure better security standards for WhatsApp's 3 billion monthly active users, according to a statement issued by Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp. "As we've continued to grow, we've realized we need to make some changes to our technology infrastructure," said a spokesperson for Meta in a statement. "Our goal is to provide the best possible experience for everyone who uses our service."
The move will see users facing issues including app crashes and errors when trying to access WhatsApp on older Android devices. Users are advised to upgrade their operating systems before the deadline to avoid disruptions to their communication services.
WhatsApp users can expect a formal notification from Meta in the coming months regarding the new requirements, and the company's efforts to support users upgrading existing smartphones with newer versions of Android will also be announced in due course.
The WhatsApp announcement comes as part of a wider trend by tech companies towards supporting more compatible devices across their platforms.
