WhatsApp Starts Dropping Support for Older Mobile Devices Starting January 1, 2025
In a move aimed at improving security and app functionality, Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced that it will no longer support several Android devices running older versions of the operating system. The update will primarily impact users with smartphones over nine years old.
As of January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on older Android smartphones including Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), HTC One X & HTC One X+, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G, and LG Nexus 4. However, iPhone users have until May 2025 to upgrade to newer devices to continue using the app.
According to Meta, the decision is made due to security reasons as older devices struggle to support new features and can't protect user data effectively. The company will focus on devices that can run the latest software to provide a better and safer experience for users.
The impact of this update is significant, particularly for Android device owners who may have older smartphones without the necessary upgrades. It's advisable for users to check their phone model before January 1, 2025, as WhatsApp may not continue to function on lower-end models unless an update becomes available.
In its latest report, WhatsApp has banned a staggering 82,93,000 accounts in India, with 16,10,000 of these being proactive bans initiated by the platform. The report also highlights two ways for users to raise concerns about alleged violations of WhatsApp's Terms of Service or account-related issues - via email or postal mail.
