Watson Heaps Praise on Young Aussie Sam Konstas Ahead of 2025 ICC Champions Trophy

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has expressed his admiration for Sam Konstas' electrifying debut in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, while also backing Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Konstas, just 19 years old, made an unforgettable impression with a quickfire 60 off 65 balls on the opening day of the fourth Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), showcasing unconventional shots like scoops against India's ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. The youngster's aggressive approach and extroverted personality caught Watson off guard, describing him as a "natural showman who thrives on the big stage."

Watson, who has mentored Konstas, noted that the young Aussie was usually quiet and reserved but displayed a different side to himself on the field. He praised Konstas' confidence and technical soundness in adapting to different conditions and bowlers.

However, Watson also expressed disappointment about India not traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy due to political tensions, a unique hosting model that has sparked discussions in the cricket community. "It's unfortunate that India isn't travelling to Pakistan. India-Pakistan games are iconic," he said. "However, the Champions Trophy itself is vital for keeping ODI cricket alive amidst the dominance of Tests and T20 leagues."

Watson also backed Kohli and Sharma, stating that their recent Test form would not impact their performances in the one-day format. "Kohli is an absolute master of one-day cricket...Yes, he's a master of all formats, but especially ODIs," Watson said, highlighting their extraordinary ODI records.

The Australian camp is now gearing up for Konstas' maiden appearance at his home ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where he will become the youngest Australian to feature in a Test at the venue. The challenge ahead will also include two Tests in Sri Lanka under vastly different conditions.
