Veteran Director Shyam Benegal Remembered with Tributes at Memorial Event
Mumbai, Maharashtra, December 29 (ANI): The literary world in India is mourning the loss of a legend as veteran director Shyam Benegal, who passed away on December 23 at the age of 90, was paid tribute through a memorial event attended by several big names from Bollywood.
The 'Manthan' director took his final breath at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. Born on December 14, 1934, Benegal collaborated extensively with notable actors and filmmakers such as Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, and Javed Akhtar.
Benegal is remembered for his incredible impact on Indian cinema, addressing socio-political themes with remarkable depth. His films, including the epic 'Junoon' (1979) and international acclaim-gaining 'Manthan' (1976), are celebrated globally. The latter was showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and featured prominent figures such as Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, and members of the Verghese Kurien family.
Throughout his illustrious career, Benegal received numerous awards including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and India's highest honour in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. His contributions to Indian and world cinema will continue to inspire generations.
