A constitutional crisis has descended upon the United States under the presidency of Donald Trump, according to Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the law school at the University of California, Berkeley.
Chemerinsky expressed his concerns on Friday, stating that the US is currently experiencing a constitutional crisis. He cited numerous examples of unconstitutional and illegal actions taken by President Trump since taking office 18 days ago.
"Revoking birthright citizenship, freezing federal spending, shutting down an agency, removing leaders of other agencies, firing government employees subject to civil service protections, and threatening to deport people based on their political views are just a few instances of Mr. Trump's lawless conduct," Chemerinsky said.
These actions, according to Chimersky, have never been seen before in the annals of US history. He warned that once one starts down this slippery slope, it can quickly escalate into "something much worse".
The constitutional expert expressed alarm at the rapid slide towards a full-blown crisis under Trump's presidency. His statement highlights the increasingly divided tone between the executive and judicial branches of government, as well as civil society.
In related news, protests have been held across major cities in the US, with advocates calling for checks and balances to be put into action against Trump's policies.
