US and India Launch New AI Collaboration Amid Growing Tech Ties
Washington D.C., Jan 8 - The United States and India have pledged to strengthen their partnership in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with a focus on investments, protections, and national security applications.
According to a fact sheet issued by the White House on Monday, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval discussed several initiatives aimed at promoting reciprocal investments and aligning protections around AI technology diffusion. The move marks a significant enhancement of their strategic technology partnership, which has been strengthened over the past four years.
The joint effort aims to develop a government-to-government framework for AI development, ensuring safe, secure, and trustworthy AI solutions. Additionally, they will intensify cooperation on national security applications of AI, underscoring the growing importance of emerging technologies in global relations.
The White House readout stated that Sullivan and Doval have previously promoted concrete initiatives around AI and other technologies under the India-US Initiative on Critical and Emergency Technologies (iCET), launched in May 2022. Other areas of bilateral collaboration include space technology, defense innovation, industrial cooperation, clean energy, critical minerals, and semiconductors.
Their efforts come amidst a surge in Big Tech investments in India's AI sector, with Amazon and Microsoft committing billions of dollars to the field. Microsoft has pledged around $3.7 billion to Telangana state for data center development, while Amazon plans to invest $12.7 billion by the end of the decade.
India's IT ministry has recently emphasized the need for government clearance before releasing AI-powered products deemed unreliable or untested. Amid these developments, New Delhi reaffirmed its commitment to greater cooperation with Washington D.C., underscoring a comprehensive global strategic partnership between the two nations.
