Union Ministry Organises National Leagues in Key Sports Disciplines

New Delhi: In an attempt to revolutionize the country's sports landscape, the Union Sports Ministry has decided to launch national leagues in key disciplines, with the objective of providing a structured platform for athletes to showcase their talents.

As the country grapples with internal conflicts and unprofessional governance at various sports federations, the ministry has taken it upon itself to create a developmental system that nurtures grassroots talent. An array of government-run sports academies will be set up across the nation, which will provide comprehensive training, equipment, and financial support to promising sportspersons.

These leagues aim to enhance sports professionalism in those disciplines where professional meets have never been staged or have been neglected for a long time. The structure of these leagues will be governed by franchise-based model, with the Union and Sports Authority of India (SAI) providing overarching support.

"We won't allow overseas teams or athletes to participate if they threaten our goals,” said a senior ministry official. "Our focus is on boosting professionalism in sports while promoting the culture of sports academies across India."

However, the Union Sports Ministry will collaborate with existing professional leagues if there is an adequate level of competitive exposure for athletes."The primary goal of this league-based system is to enhance sports culture and provide opportunities for athletes," added the official.
