Union Health Minister Urges Industry and Academia to Suggest Roadmap for Better Healthcare Services
New Delhi: Union Health Minister J P Nadda has called upon the industry and academia to suggest a roadmap for better healthcare services in the country, saying India's remarkable healthcare evolution over the last 10 years is marked by significant achievements.
Addressing the Healthcare Summit at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Saturday, Mr. Nadda said that the MedTech sector is growing rapidly and is expected to reach USD 30 billion by 2030. The Minister highlighted India's remarkable journey in healthcare, which includes expanding medical infrastructure, strengthening public healthcare with initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and Mission Indradhanush, and robust disease control measures.
"We have made significant progress in the past decade, including expanding AIIMS and medical colleges, strengthening public health, and implementing effective disease control measures," Mr. Nadda said. "The government's commitment to accessible healthcare has led to this transformative change."
He also added that India now stands as a global leader in affordable medicines and vaccines, fulfilling about 20 per cent of the global generic drug supply needs by volume and producing 60 per cent of the world's vaccines.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Nadda exhorted the industry and academia to contribute to policy interventions with their research. "We need your suggestions on policy interventions, innovations, joint collaborations," he said. "Your research work is meant to be implemented in policies, and we as policymakers are ready to do it."
The Union Minister also felicitated the winners of the healthcare hackathon organised by the IIMA as a pre-summit event for students and startups on the theme of " Digital Strategies for Universal Health Coverage by 2047" and "Managing Non communicable Diseases by 2047".
The second edition of the IIMA Healthcare Summit was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Management of Health Services (CMHS) and the Alumni and External Relations Office at the IIMA, in association with the IIMA Healthcare Alumni Special Interest Group (ASIG).
