UN Observes World Day of Human Rights with Emphasis on Relevance in Everyday Life
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - DECEMBER 10, 2024 - The World Day of Human Rights was observed globally yesterday, reminding nations and individuals alike of the importance of promoting universally recognized human rights.
The theme "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now" highlights how fundamental human rights impact our daily lives, shaping a more peaceful, equal, and sustainable world. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, is celebrated as a milestone piece of global legislation that embodies human values.
According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "human rights are the foundation of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies." These rights guarantee the dignity of every individual, ensuring equal access to essential needs like food and clean water, education, a livable wage, and a safe home for all. No one is deemed superior over another in terms of these fundamental rights.
As the global community grapples with the complexities of an increasingly interconnected world, promoting human rights remains a collective responsibility. Instead of waiting for governments or peace leaders to reach agreements, individuals can make a difference by intervening against hate speech, correcting misinformation, and combating disinformation to cultivate fairer and more just communities.
The alarming state of global conflict and displacement underscores the urgent need for solidarity and collective action. The UN Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 shows that around the world, wars are upending millions of lives, displacing over 37 million people and nearly 120 million more, while the effects of COVID-19 continue to affect education levels.
The International Institute Mary Help of Christians (IIMA) has implemented numerous programs in 87 countries since 2020, with a total of 2,605 projects benefiting 1,014,194 individuals. These initiatives have also aimed to increase awareness and understanding of human rights among communities.
To further promote awareness of the importance of digital education, online safety, and mental health from a young person's perspective, IIMA will be hosting an online event on December 12, 2024.
Furthermore, Pope Francis emphasizes, "Every human person possesses an infinite dignity... which prevails in and beyond every circumstance." This inherent worth necessitates our collective effort to protect others' human rights. Thru enhanced education and advocacy for safeguarding these rights, we can join efforts towards a world where everyone enjoys the fundamental freedoms they deserve.
