On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we had the opportunity to meet with two remarkable women, Ibtissam Marchiq and Véronique Blanc, who are dedicated to advancing oncology research at Servier. Both scientists have overcome challenges as women in a male-dominated field and now contribute significantly to the company's efforts in immuno-oncology.
Ibtissam Marchiq, Asset Leader in Oncology, has over 15 years of experience in pharmaceutical research and development. Her journey was marked by obstacles, but she found inspiration and guidance from her mentors and role models. When asked about advice for younger generations, Ibtissam emphasized the importance of speaking out against injustices and advocating for one's rights, particularly when it comes to salary.
Véronique Blanc, also an expert in immuno-oncology, has been a driving force for change within Servier. She has held leadership positions and spoken openly about the challenges faced by women in the pharmaceutical industry. Véronique stresses that men must play a crucial role in fighting for gender equality and encourages them to recognize and challenge systemic biases.
Both women have seen significant changes in our industry, with more female figures emerging as leaders and advocates for diversity and inclusion. Emma Walmsley, CEO of GSK, is one such example who has been vocal about promoting diversity and addressing the underrepresentation of women in the pharmaceutical industry.
These two women embody the power of collaboration, perseverance, and resilience. Their determination to advance oncology research at Servier serves as an inspiration to younger generations seeking to pursue careers in science. By embracing change and fighting for equality, we can unlock new discoveries and improve patient outcomes.
Quote from Véronique Blanc: "To be able to take the place they deserve and enable the company to meet its challenges, it is essential that women become aware of the systemic biases that influence their careers. But above all, women and men need to recognize and fight these biases together."
Quote from Ibtissam Marchiq: "Success in science depends on a combination of passion, curiosity and, above all, resilience. It is by persevering in the face of challenges that great discoveries are born."
