Trump Names Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Next Secretary of Health and Human Services

Washington D.C., U.S. - In a move that surprised many, President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will appoint Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Kennedy, a well-known anti-vaccination advocate, was met with skepticism by some over his selection for the role, which would require Senate confirmation.

"This is not just any appointment," Trump said in a statement on social media platform X. "The Safety and Health of all Americans is the most important role of any Administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, and food additives."

Kennedy, who accepted the offer Thursday, had been under consideration for several days following his multiple meetings with Trump in the final weeks of the election campaign.

In October, Trump hinted at Kennedy's potential appointment for a public health portfolio, saying he would give him "the freedom to go wild on health, go wild on the food, and go wild on medicines."

Kennedy has been a vocal advocate against vaccination, claiming that vaccines are linked to various health problems. However, in the final days of his campaign, Kennedy suspended his bid for president and endorsed Trump, suggesting he was open to serving in the administration.

Under Trump's leadership, Kennedy vowed to cut employees from "the nutrition departments" at the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as replacing a significant number of officials at the National Institutes of Health. He also committed to removing fluoride from public water nationwide, a proposal that has sparked controversy among health experts.

Kennedy's selection faces significant scrutiny from Senate Republicans as his confirmed appointment would test their loyalty. Critics are now questioning whether Trump's decision was a mistake.

The move is seen as another example of Trump's unconventional approach to government appointments. Following the announcement, concerns have been raised about Kennedy's ability to lead HHS due to his background on issues like vaccine safety and efficacy.
