Trump Line Up Marco Rubio and Michael Waltz for Top Jobs, US Media Say

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly lining up two Florida lawmakers, Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Michael Waltz, for senior foreign relations jobs in his administration.
According to sources familiar with the transition team, Rubio, 53, who challenged Trump for the presidential nomination in 2016, is in talks to be nominated as Secretary of State. The role, which functions as America's top diplomat, has not been finalized yet and appears that Trump could still change his mind.
Rubio, a foreign policy hawk, has taken a tough stance on China and Iran, which aligns with Trump's views on the two countries. He will serve as Assistant Secretary of State for Political, Economic, and Security Affairs, overseeing the US relationship with countries like China, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East and NATO.
On the other hand, Waltz, 50, a military veteran and congressman, is reportedly being considered to be named National Security Adviser. The role would involve identifying and countering threats to the US without Senate approval. Two sources have confirmed this to CBS News.
Waltz's office has not responded to requests for comment. As a decorated Green Beret and seasoned army veteran, Waltz was re-elected to Congress last week and is known for his tough line on China. He had previously argued that the US needs to prepare for conflict in the Pacific and advocate for NATO allies to increase defense spending.
The reported roles come as Trump's administration is starting to take shape after his win in last week's presidential election. The president-elect has nominated several officials, including Susie Wiles as chief of staff, Tom Homan as "border tsar," and Elise Stefanik as future ambassador to the United Nations.
