Transformative Education Initiative Launched in Europe, Vowing to Power Healthcare with Digital Health Data

Helsinki, Finland - University of Oulu today proudly announced the launch of the Sustainable Healthcare with Digital Health Data Competence (SUSA) initiative, a groundbreaking educational project geared towards empowering professionals in healthcare to navigate a rapidly digitizing landscape.

The SUSA initiative marks a pivotal moment for European healthcare education, with a consortium of 12 leading academic institutions from across nine European countries committing €12.4 million in funding. The comprehensive project is designed to address the growing need for advanced digital skills in healthcare, equipping professionals to harness data and leverage technology to drive sustainable healthcare solutions.

"We are creating a workforce that can revolutionize patient care, improve efficiency, and contribute to a more equitable healthcare system," stated Minna Isomursu, SUSA's project leader and professor at the University of Oulu. "Through this project, we believe we can shape the future of healthcare."

The SUSA educational framework addresses critical gaps in healthcare's digital competencies by introducing innovative content on data, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), sustainability, regulation, and global health. The consortium has incorporated cutting-edge technology and interdisciplinary collaboration into education, producing 6558 graduates and upskilling 660 professionals with specialized digital competencies critical to advancing healthcare practices across Europe.

SUSA is not only focusing on the next generation of students but also targets healthcare professionals seeking to update their skills through modular learning opportunities. These flexible modules cater to diverse career paths and enable medical professionals, care providers, and technical staff to integrate advanced digital tools into their work, enhancing employability and supporting career growth.

The project emphasizes collaboration with key stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem, including hospitals, research institutes, and technology providers. By providing practical experience and exposure to real-world challenges, SUSA ensures its graduates not only possess theoretical knowledge but also develop essential hands-on skills.

SUSA is closely aligned with European Union goals, including the European Green Deal and Digital Decade objectives, by promoting sustainable healthcare solutions through advanced education. The project aims to train a generation of professionals proficient in data-driven decision-making, supporting long-term policy objectives such as reducing environmental impact, improving resource efficiency, and enhancing patient outcomes.

By empowering healthcare delivery with data-driven insights, SUSA is committed to fostering a healthier European society, leveraging the power of education to cultivate new generations. With its massive project budget, innovative educational offerings, and emphasis on stakeholder collaboration, the Sustainable Healthcare with Digital Health Data Competence project promises to transform Europe's healthcare landscape in years to come.
