Rabat, Morocco - January 25, 2025

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) committee has officially released the procedure for the final draw ceremony scheduled to take place on Monday, 27 January at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat. The highly anticipated event promises to be a nail-biting spectacle as the 24 qualified teams vie for the coveted title.

As confirmed by the TotalEnergies CAF, host nation Morocco will occupy position A1 in Group A, marking the beginning of an exciting tournament. Current AFCON champions, Cote d'Ivoire, have secured their place at the head of one of the other five groups (Pot 1) based on their impressive FIFA World Ranking as of December 19, 2024.

Morocco and Senegal will be joined by Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and the rest of the top-10 teams to form Pot 1, marking the tiered system that determines group assignments for the tournament. Meanwhile, Pots 2, 3, 4 will feature another selection of highly ranked nations competing in four groups each.

According to the procedure detailed by TotalEnergies CAF, a sequence of draws is set out for all pots:

  • Pot 1 hosts Group As (Morocco) and other A teams that follow from top ranked positions.
  • Pot 2 will be next used to fill spots in group B through F - beginning from position B4.

To maximize team exposure the following sequential draws are employed: (From Pots 1-2): Ball #1 at group A, then moves one per draw for subsequent pots, alternating between pots until all groups (from group BC/DEF)

In this way all pot drawings will lead up to Group C in F.

Subsequently, from pot balls in #3 &4 comes an ongoing round from 4th to final positions. - Pot #3 contributes from F going downward, starting at spot E - Likewise - Pots #4 contribute F with ball number 10 and then moving one towards the lower final spots ending up with last ball as B1
