Top Police Officials to Focus on New Criminal Laws, Organised Crime & Cybercrime in DG-IG Conference

Bhubaneswar: The Director General and Inspector General (DG and IG) conference of top police officials is set to take place in Bhubaneswar from November 29, where three new criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam - will be the focus point.

The conference, which is likely to discuss the challenges faced in implementing the new laws, including "teething issues" with manpower and resource building across various levels of the criminal justice system. The government hopes that sharing best practices followed by Union Territories like Delhi can help improve implementation.

Police officials are also expected to focus on organised crime, particularly its cross-border nature, and how to tackle it effectively. The growing threat of gangs like the Lawrence Bishnoi gang is another concern, with the NIA having found evidence suggesting their collaboration with terror groups.

Cybercrime is also likely to be a key area of discussion at the conference, with an emphasis on setting up special cybercrime thanas for investigation and better utilising Centre's databases to tackle online crimes. While there have been concerns about the lack of awareness among victims of cybercrimes, the prime minister recently mentioned the concept of "digital arrest."

Attending the conference will be Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other senior officials from the government, all of whom are expected to share their insights on tackling these crimes.

According to sources, the best practices followed by Union Territories like Delhi are likely to be shared with other states, focusing on issues such as recruitment of forensic officials, new forensic universities in states, digital evidence gathering, and production of undertrials through video conferencing.

The event has been organised by the Intelligence Bureau and is expected to provide a platform for top police officials from across the country to share their experiences and discuss strategies to tackle these rising threats.
