Nation Mourns Loss of Economic Architect, Tun Dr Mahathir's Right-Hand Man, Tun Daim Zainuddin
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- The nation has lost a renowned economist and statesman, Tun Daim Zainuddin, who passed away this morning at the age of 86. A former Prime Minister's mentor in economic matters, Daim was instrumental in shaping Malaysia's economic policies during his tenure as Finance Minister.
Born on April 29, 1938, in Alor Setar, Kedah, Tun Daim had a storied career that transcended politics. As the founder of the company, LCM Development Berhad, which has become synonymous with high-end property development, he earned respect for his business acumen. His appointment as Finance Minister from 1984 to 1991 and again from 1999 to 2001 cemented his reputation as a shrewd economist.
Daim's expertise in extricating Malaysia from economic turmoil in the 1980s and 1990s was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the country's subsequent growth. The nation's economic recovery during this period, which saw Malaysia record one of Asia's highest growth rates, can be attributed to his astute policy decisions.
Education-wise, Tun Daim holds a law degree from Lincoln's Inn in London and an Urban Planning degree from University of California, Berkeley. He received his early education at local Malay schools before moving on to prestigious institutions, including the Sultan Abdul Hamid College and St Xavier’s Institution, George Town, Penang.
Throughout his career, Tun Daim was characterised by business observers as restrained yet fiercely shrewd as an economist and businessman. His impact on Malaysia's economic landscape will be remembered as seminal for generations to come.
