TikTok Deadline Extension Looms as Trump Considers Giving More Time to China-Based ByteDance

Washington D.C.: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday indicated that he may give more time to China-based ByteDance to sell its US operations of the popular video app TikTok, defying a looming deadline.
Trump had first mentioned the possibility of extending the June 19 deadline in May, and hinted at reconsideration since then. He reiterated his willingness to push back the timeline when asked about it earlier today during a press conference on Air Force One.
Although Trump acknowledged that approval from China would be necessary for any deal, he expressed confidence in securing President Xi Jinping's consent. "Probably have to get China approval but I think we'll get it," Trump said.
Trump's stance on TikTok has undergone significant changes since his first term, when he initially vowed to ban the app. However, during the recent 2024 election campaign, he shifted his position, citing the app's role in balancing Meta Industries' power.
The decision comes as the US and China negotiate a new trade deal. Earlier this year, Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods but paused them later. The latest developments have sparked concern that China is willing to back down, given Trump's desire for a resolution.
In January, ByteDance announced its intention to sell TikTok's US operations amid talks with the Trump administration. However, under President Biden, the company had stated it had no plans to divest. Following Trump's decision on April tariffs, ByteDance disclosed that it was in discussions with the US government, necessitating China's approval for any potential sale.
The Chinese government initially expressed willingness to approve a deal but backed out after the tariffs were announced. Since then, there has been speculation about the future of TikTok in the US.
Trump's flexibility on the deadline comes as negotiations between the two countries continue to make headway. The outcome will have significant implications for ByteDance and its users worldwide.
