The Pursuit of Knowledge: Finding One's True Giant
A Local Scientist Embarks on Unlikely Career Path as Science Journalist
In a twist of fate, Andrea Lius, a Ph.D. graduate from local universities, has discovered her true calling – not as a renowned scientist, but as a science journalist. Lius, who often referred to herself as "a giant" while pursuing her Ph.D., admits that she initially sought to stand on the shoulders of giants in the scientific community.
While working towards her Ph.D., Lius found herself drawn to various research areas, only to be sidetracked by new discoveries and ideas. Despite feeling torn between staying within a specific field or exploring other interests, she eventually discovered writing as an outlet for her curiosity.
Lius began writing personal essays and articles for ASBMB Today, a scientific publication, under a pseudonym. Her experiences as both an introvert and a non-native English speaker surprised her with the joy of conducting interviews with scientists from diverse backgrounds. Since then, Lius has written numerous pieces on various science topics, often delving into the personal stories behind their research.
The turning point for Lius came when she began to appreciate the freedom that came with writing about science without being tied to a specific area of expertise. She realized that her Ph.D. training had not only honed her communication skills but also reignited her passion for science itself.
Luis's journey as a science journalist has been shaped by her encounters with giants and wanderers alike. Despite initial reservations from mentors and herself about leaving academia, she has found solace in exploring the intersection of science and storytelling.
"I've come to understand that there's beauty in both standing on the shoulders of giants and telling stories about them," Lius said in a recent interview. "I'm happiest when I set my curiosities free and untether myself from specific areas of expertise."
With her newfound career path, Lius hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions, even if they don't fit the traditional mold of academia.
As she looks back on her journey, Lius says, "I've learned that sometimes it takes embracing uncertainty and wandering to discover one's true giant."
