Tamil Woman's Food Manufacturing Business Achieves Success Despite Odds

A local entrepreneur from Pudur village in Tanjore district has turned her passion into a thriving business, despite facing numerous challenges along the way.

Kokila Khanna, who joined the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management (NIFTEM) for training, received guidance on starting a business that inspired her to create healthy snacks using small grains like millet, rye, corn, and sorghum. She launched her food manufacturing business in 2018 with an initial investment of Rs 25 lakh, supplemented by another Rs 50 lakh from the Tamil Nadu government's NEEDS grant and loan scheme.

At first, people didn't take to her products, but Kokila persevered, visiting shops personally to explain the benefits of her Rs 5 millet biscuits. Over time, demand grew steadily, and today her company employs 15 locals, including women and youth.

The business has purchased raw materials worth Rs 5-10 lakh monthly and earns a profit of Rs 1-2 lakh despite Kokila's lack of prior experience in the food industry. Her husband's support and that of her workers have been key to her success.

Kokila credits NIFTEM for guiding her journey, saying hard work and focus are essential for overcoming challenges. She dreams of introducing more innovative and organic snacks to the market and promoting healthy eating and sustainable farming practices.

The story of Kokila Khanna is an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating that with courage and dedication, even the toughest goals can be achieved.
