Tackling Delhi's Air Pollution: Expert Advice on Protecting Your Health at Home
Delhi residents continue to reel under the impact of poor air quality, with experts warning of increased risks to health. In a last-ditch effort to mitigate these effects, health advocates have emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to protect one's well-being in light of the alarming air quality levels.
The Supreme Court has said that the Centre bears a constitutional obligation to ensure citizens breathe pollution-free air, further emphasizing the need for immediate action.
According to Dr. PN Arora, MD, Yashoda Super-Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi , "Worsening air quality poses a significant concern to us all,". He warned that persistent dust particles cause lasting effects on the lungs. The high levels of these particles can increase the risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma or COPD.
The impact is particularly severe for those already struggling with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). According to Dr Arora, even mild exposure to air pollution can exacerbate existing symptoms, leading to difficulty breathing and increased medical treatments necessities.
Dr. PN Arora advises the immediate implementation of practical steps such as frequently consuming hot water, wearing N95 or N99 masks when stepping outside, and using certified air purifiers at home to reduce exposure to pollutants.
Health advocate Ruchi Sahay echoes Dr Arora's views," As Delhi-NCR grapples with unprecedented air pollution levels, protecting one's health becomes paramount, especially for the elderly, children and individuals suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular conditions" .
Sahay points out that limiting outdoor exposure when possible is crucial during this time". Experts highly recommend wearing N95 or N99 masks outdoors to shield against pollutants", while also stressing the significance of indoor air quality improvement measures.
Indoors, installing certified air purifiers can significantly reduce particulate matter levels and ensure cleaner air for households , Sahay noted.
These expert-recommended steps provide Delhi residents with vital guidance during these critical times. By taking proactive steps, individuals can protect their health from the adverse effects of persistent dust particles and toxic pollutants emanating from air pollution.
