Swiggy Acquires Team Mumbai in WPBL, Embarks on Innovative Partnership
Online food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy has announced its acquisition of Team Mumbai in the upcoming World Pickleball League (WPBL), India's first and only global franchise-based pickleball league. The inaugural season of the WPBL is set to take place from January 24 to February 2, 2025.
As part of this innovative partnership, Swiggy will be bringing its expertise in food delivery and experience management to the popular sports platform, offering fans a unique twist on traditional sporting events. Pickleball has been witnessing a surge in popularity globally due to its accessibility for players of all ages and has become a popular recreational and lifestyle activity.
Speaking about the acquisition, Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Swiggy Food Marketplace, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership saying, "This partnership is an exciting chapter for us at Swiggy. The Mumbai team becomes the second franchise announced by WPBL after the Chennai franchise owned by actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The first edition of the World Pickleball League will take place in Mumbai, offering fans a thrilling experience with food and entertainment.
According to Gaurav Natekar, cofounder and CEO of WPBL, the league is poised for growth and believes that brands like Swiggy's involvement will propel it to become one of India's best and most popular leagues in the next 3-5 years. "We're thrilled to have Swiggy on board, a true testament to how pickleball is vibing with the masses," Natekar stated.
