In a recognition of her outstanding coaching prowess and dedication to promoting gender parity in athletics, Suma Shirur, the Olympic and former chief coach of the Indian Shooting Team, was awarded the prestigious Coach of the Year (Female) award by the Indian Sports Honours 2024 on Monday, November 11.
Shirur's name is once again etched in the annals of India's sporting history as she continues to lead Indian shooters to unprecedented success. Recognized for her pivotal role in India's Paris Olympics and Paralympics triumphs, Shirur has left an indelible mark on the sport with the country securing three Olympic shooting medals.
Under her mentorship, Avani Lekhara achieved a historic second Paralympics Gold in the Women’s 10m event, marking a defining moment in Shirur's coaching career. Shirur expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her team, emphasizing that this award is not just hers but belongs to every athlete and colleague who has worked tirelessly alongside her.
"This award is everyone's achievement, driven by dedication and a shared vision to elevate Indian shooting to new heights," Shirur explained during her acceptance speech at the prestigious event. "I am honored to receive recognition for my contributions but acknowledge that this feat belongs to my team members, colleagues, and the countless athletes who have been fortunate enough to train under me."
The Indian Sports Honours celebrate top performances across 14 categories, guided by a jury comprising Abhinav Bindra, India's first individual Olympic gold medalist, along with notable sports figures such as PT Usha, Vijender Singh, Yogeshwar Dutt, and Sardar Singh.
In addition to her coaching prowess, Shirur advocates for gender equality in sports and grassroots development through her Lakshya Shooting Club, where over 200 national-level shooters have been trained. Her enduring contributions continue to inspire future generations of athletes in Indian sports.
