Sri Lanka's Spin Doctor Theekshana Reflects on World Cup Heartbreak, Looks Ahead with Positive Vibes
Colombo, November 20 - Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana recalled the horror of the 2023 ODI World Cup on Indian soil, where his team's campaign ended in disappointment. Despite the setback, Theekshana expressed satisfaction with the team's current performance and the positive environment within the squad.
After taking three crucial wickets against New Zealand at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on November 17, Theekshana joined forces with wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis to secure a breathtaking three-wicket win. This victory marked Sri Lanka's first ODI series win against New Zealand in 12 years and came just months after they defeated Rohit Sharma-led India at home.
Theekshana, who scored 27 runs off 44 deliveries, including two fours and a six, attributed the turn-around in fortunes to the team's strong bench depth. "We've got a good bench strength, we have experienced and young players, you need to keep doing well with so much competition around," he said.
Reflecting on their approach to the win chase, Theekshana revealed that they deliberately took singles to put pressure on New Zealand and capitalize on any opportunities that presented themselves. "Special credit to Kusal Mendis for his fine knock. They knew they had to take wickets, so they gave a single to him and tried to dismiss me. I played my shots, hit boundaries of bad balls and took the runs on offer," Theekshana said.
The win marks a significant turning point in Sri Lanka's cricket fortunes, with the team having shown renewed solidity under head coach Sanath Jayasuriya. With several upcoming ICC events on the horizon, including the World Test Championship, Sri Lanka is now poised to make a major impact in international cricket.
