Sri Lanka, a Hidden Gem for Malayali Travellers

Sri Lanka, a Hidden Gem for Malayali Travellers

When the ultralong-haul flight that took off from Chennai finally landed at the Bandaranayake International Airport 1 hour and 20 minutes later, I couldn’t help but wonder whether I had arrived in Kerala. The serene blue sea, rows of coconut trees, and busy city streets all seemed familiar, transporting me back to the beaches and markets of my home state.

The experience reminded me of legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair’s short story 'Ninte Ormakku', which featured Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka. The island nation boasts similar geography and flavors, with its coconut-based dishes and stunning natural beauty making it an attractive destination for Keralite travelers on a budget.

Sri Lanka's tourism industry is heavily reliant on foreign visitors, particularly those from India due to their proximity. With the recent financial crisis taking a toll on the country, the government is looking to revitalize the sector by promoting tourist-friendly attractions and infrastructure.

As I stepped off the plane, my guide Arunachalam Manoharan greeted me with a warm smile. He led me to a stunning beachfront hotel in Negombo, where we spent the night enjoying a delicious breakfast of idiyappam, egg palappam and chutney. The breakfast dishes were similar to those found in Kerala, further emphasizing our cultural connections.

A visit to Sri Lanka is not only a great option for Malayali travelers but also an insightful experience into the country's rich history and resilience. My five-day trip took me through iconic places like Colombo, Negombo, Bentota, Gella Kota, Udawalawe, and Hambantota. The scenery was breathtaking, from the lush greenery of Udawalawe National Park to the pristine beauty of Ahungalla Beach.

One of the highlights of my visit was the Bentota River safari, which granted a unique experience into the enchanting charm of the dense mangrove forests. We also had thrilling rides on speedboats, banana rafts, and water scooters. The majestic Kalutara Buddha temple overlooking the river added to the trip's mystique.

Sri Lanka is indeed an emerald gem, boasting incredible natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. With its stunning landscapes and diverse culture, this island nation has every reason to be considered a must-destination for Malayali travelers seeking a new adventure.
