Smartphone Usage Linked to Accelerated Aging Through Musculoskeletal Pain

A recent study published in a reputable journal has found that excessive smartphone usage can lead to musculoskeletal pain, including neck, shoulder, elbow, and hand injuries. The research, conducted by researchers from Bangladesh and India, investigates the effects of "smartphone addiction" on physical well-being.

The study involved assessing 326 college-goers aged between 18 and 30 using various tools, such as questionnaires and assessment scales. The results show that 69.2 per cent of students were moderately to severely addicted to their smartphones, with 43.3 per cent reporting neck pain and 42.9 per cent experiencing shoulder pain.

According to the researchers, poor posture is a key factor contributing to pain caused by smartphone usage, as users tend to adopt a forward head posture while using their devices. Continuous muscle contraction, repetitive thumb movements, and wrist flexion also contribute to strain on the muscles in these areas.

The long-term impact of this condition can be damaging, potentially leading to chronic musculoskeletal issues that affect an individual's quality of life. The researchers are advocating for better ergonomic awareness and frequent breaks during smartphone usage to prevent pain and long-term damage.

Experts recommend adopting simple yet effective strategies to mitigate the negative effects of smartphone usage on physical health. These include:

  • Ensuring good posture when using handheld devices
  • Taking regular breaks from screen time to reduce eye strain and promote relaxation
  • Holding devices at an angle that reduces strain on neck and spine muscles
  • Protecting hands and wrists from excessive motion and strain
  • Following the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking away from screens every 20 minutes and focusing on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

As smartphone usage continues to become an integral part of our lives, it is essential to be aware of its potential impact on physical health. By adopting these simple precautions and being mindful of their screen time, individuals can reduce the risk of musculoskeletal pain and promote overall well-being.
