SKUAST Launches Technology-Driven Walnut Processing Facility in Handwara

Srinagar, June 16 (Alayaran.com): The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) has launched a comprehensive walnut processing value chain at its research centre in Kulangam, Handwara, with the aim of promoting technology-driven solutions for adding value to the Walnut sector.

Speaking during his visit to the facility, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganie announced that the university is committed to creating employment opportunities for local youth by leveraging this initiative. He stated that there is a need for reform in the current marketing system for walnuts in the region, which lacks proper grading systems, enabling only one crop to be sold at a time.

To address this issue, SKUAST has set up a state-of-the-art walnut processing value chain facility that includes de-hulling, grading, drying, breaking, and packaging facilities. The Vice Chancellor said that his institution aims to ensure that the youth of the region adopt this technology to create self-employment opportunities and generate jobs for others as well.

However, Prof. Ganie added that due to logistical limitations, the full setup might not be possible in all locations. "We plan to establish one centre at the university, which will serve as a model for replication by others," he said.

Regarding infrastructure development concerns, particularly road connectivity around the facility, the Vice Chancellor assured that this issue would be taken up with the district authorities. "We will discuss road expansion with the District Commissioner to ensure better access to the facility," he stated.

The protected multiplication system for walnuts has also been developed, which includes a fully fenced area surrounding walnut fields, ensuring security and safeguarding these crops for future use.

With this technology-driven initiative, SKUAST is confident that it can contribute significantly to the development of the Walnut sector in Jammu and Kashmir, generating employment opportunities and creating a sustainable lifestyle for the local youth.
