Siemens Unveils World's First Fully Electronic Starter with Semiconductor Technology
Munich, Germany -- December 5, 2023 - Siemens Smart Infrastructure has launched its first fully electronic starter with semiconductor technology, the SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter, aiming to revolutionize motor protection and switching in industrial applications worldwide.
This groundbreaking device offers short-circuit protection that is 1000 times faster than conventional solutions like circuit breakers or fuses. The SI-C MOSFET-based technology enables ultra-fast and wear-free switching, neutralizing high inrush currents typical of high-efficiency motors in industries such as food and beverage, intralogistics, and mechanical engineering.
The e-Starter features Siemens' intuitive Smart Start application, which mitigates the impact of short circuits, reducing the need for frequent device replacements. With improved protection, reduced energy consumption, and increased lifespan, the SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter sets a new standard in motor starter technology.
"We are thrilled to introduce our fully electronic e-Starter, which offers numerous benefits over traditional electromechanical or hybrid motor starters," said Andreas Matthé, CEO of Electrical Products at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. "Our device addresses two urgent challenges in the industrial sector: applications prone to short circuits and high current peaks when starting high-efficiency motors."
Key features of the SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter include:
- Fast short-circuit protection and virtually wear-free switching
- Seamless integration into Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) concept
- Compact design minimizing space requirements in control cabinets
- Easy installation and automatic hot swapping capabilities
The Siemens Smart Infrastructure team worked closely with industry experts to develop an innovative solution tailored to the needs of demanding motor applications. The product is set to make its public debut at the SPS trade fair from November 12th to 14th, 2024 in Nuremberg, Germany.
With the SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter, Siemens further strengthens its commitment to innovation and sustainability, earning the Siemens EcoTech label for its use of recycled materials and environmentally friendly design.
