SC Slams Lawyer for 'Baseless' Claims Against Judges at Azad Maidan Protest
The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday morning summoned a lawyer who allegedly made baseless claims against judges during the violent protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.
The court took up a petition filed by one Dharmesh Mehta, who had submitted an affidavit claiming that he was threatened by 14 judges. Mehta had also claimed that he saw five judges from Supreme Court engaged in criminal activities during their vacation.
The SC judge scolded Mehta saying, "This is not Azad Maidan... make a legal argument.' The court was hearing a case related to the protests at Azad Maidan where several people were injured and property damaged.
In his affidavit, Mehta had accused two judges of being involved in a serious crime. However, the SC took strong exception to his claims and told him that he should not have levelled such baseless allegations against the judiciary.
The SC told Mehta that only those who are guilty should have concerns about their own conduct and should make appropriate legal arguments if needed. The court's statement came as Mehta made a desperate attempt to justify the protests in which several people died.
This incident comes amid a growing row over the handling of violence at Azad Maidan protest against the government's actions on an issue like J&K. The opposition has levelled allegations that the Centre is trying to create communal tensions and divide Indian society.
The SC had taken note of these incidents during its hearing earlier today. A bench of two judges observed that no other state where a similar incident occurred, was ever subject to a violent situation.
As tensions continue to build in the city over the protests, the police stepped up security measures at strategic points in the city.
