Samantha Ruth Prabhu Opens Up About Battling Myositis While Preparing for 'Citadel: Honey Bunny' Role
Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been through a challenging time since her diagnosis with myositis in 2022, an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to attack muscles. Despite struggling with debilitating spasms, fatigue, and sensitivity to light during filming, Samantha took on the action-packed role of 'Honey' opposite Varun Dhawan in the Indian version of 'Citadel'.
A year after completing the series 'Citadel: Honey Bunny', which saw her portray a high-energy character, Samantha reported taking an extended hiatus from acting to focus on her health. This period marked an opportunity for her to explore alternative medicine and concentrate on recuperation.
The decision to take on a physically demanding role in such an advanced state of health has raised eyebrows among fans, but Samantha asserts it was crucial for pushing the limits of what she thought was possible in recovery.
Samantha shared intimate details about her fight against myositis, stating that she faced moments where closing her eyes mid-scenes became necessary to maintain a sense of calm due to increased sensitivity to light. She confessed these feelings to directors Krishna D K and Raj Nidimoru but chose not to share them publicly with fellow cast and crew members.
"My greatest fear was the possibility my symptoms would compel me to halt filming altogether," she revealed during an interview to emphasize her commitment to completing the project despite overwhelming difficulties.
As Samantha shares her personal journey, her battle serves as a platform for shedding light on this under-discussed autoimmune disease, encouraging awareness, and potentially reducing misconceptions associated with myositis.
While there is currently no fully comprehensible reason behind how myositis occurs; recent studies indicate that such instances occur concurrently with more prevalent conditions which may trigger its development.
