Russia Deploys Tu-160 Strategic Bombers for First Time, Conducting Missile Strikes on Ukrainian Territory

In a significant shift from previous operational deployments, Russia has deployed Tu-160 strategic bombers to conduct missile strikes on Ukrainian territory for the first time since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to sources, including the Ukrainian Air Force and social media platforms X, two Tu-160 bombers were part of a coordinated strike launched by seven Russian aircraft.
The attacks, which occurred on June 6, 2025, involved 36 Kh-101 long-range cruise missiles fired towards targets across Ukraine, marking a departure from Russia's standard reliance on the Tu-95MS bomber for such missions. The Tu-160, known as the Blackjack, is capable of delivering up to 12 Kh-101 missiles over a range exceeding 7,000 kilometers.
The deployment also follows the successful execution of Operation Spider's Web, a high-impact covert drone offensive by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) on June 1, 2025. The operation targeted five Russian airbases and resulted in the destruction or damage of numerous aircraft, including at least one Tu-160.
Experts point out that the deployment of Tu-160 bombers marks a significant shift for Russia due to their high maintenance requirements and operational costs. However, the jets' variable-sweep wings and supersonic capability have made them highly effective platforms for deep-penetration strike missions.
As Russia's situation in Ukraine remains uncertain, the Kremlin is likely intending to continue using long-range missile attacks as part of its aerial campaign. The use of Tu-160 bombers in combat roles also underscores the military's efforts to maintain momentum and degrade Ukrainian warfighting capabilities ahead of anticipated counteroffensives.
Ukraine has called for increased international support in the face of Russia's escalated operations, including sustained economic penalties against Moscow that could potentially affect the country's energy sector.
