Rohit Sharma Joins India Squad in Australia After Delayed Departure
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is finally set to reunite with his teammates in Australia, joining the squad in Perth on November 24, the third day of the ongoing first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Sharma had initially departed for Australia in three batches between November 9 and 11 but later opted to stay back in India to be with his family. The birth of their second child, a baby boy, on November 15 had delayed Rohit's departure. His rescheduling now means he will miss the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
However, Sharma will be available for the second Test at Adelaide Oval, scheduled from December 6 to 10. Indian vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has been tasked with leading the team in the Perth Test, while Pat Cummins captains Australia. This marks a rare occasion when two bowlers will lead their respective sides in the series.
As part of his preparation for the Adelaide Test, Rohit is set to feature in a two-day day-night practice match between India A and Prime Minister XI at Canberra's Manuka Oval from November 30 to December 1. The fixture, aimed at helping Rohit acclimatise to Australian conditions and regain match fitness.
Rohit's delayed travel had led to intense speculation among cricket analysts. Considering the team is already grappling with injuries and absences, including Shubman Gill's thumb injury and Jasprit Bumrah's stand-in captain role, many were eager for Sharma's return to the squad.
The Indian team will now look forward to Rohit's return, bolstered by his experience as captain and his skills in Australia. The stage is set for a thrilling battle between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
