PUJA MAHATO: FROM LOCAL VILLAGER TO COUNTRY'S MOST PROUD YOUNG CRICKETER

Gaushala, Mahottari - November 25, 2023:

Puja Mahato, a young cricketer from the humble village of Dumarwana in Ward No.9 of Gaushala Municipality, Mahottari district, has taken the nation by storm with her exceptional skills on the field. The 19-year-old's incredible performance as captain of the Nepali U-19 Women's team has earned her widespread recognition and accolades across the country.

In a stunning display of batting and bowling, Puja led her team to victory in the Asian Qualifiers, defeating hosts UAE, visitors Kuwait, and Thailand to secure their spot in the 2nd ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup and the inaugural ACC U-19 Women's Asia Cup. Her impressive performances earned her the title of most valuable player in the event and made her only individual to hit a century throughout the tournament.

Puja's name is on everyone's lips now, but just a week ago, she was an unknown figure in her village. However, after returning to her hometown, Puja has been showered with honors and recognitions from local authorities, cricket associations, and other organizations. Gaushala Municipality presented her with a cash prize of Rs 151,000, while Madhes Province Sports Minister Pramod Kumar Jaiswal congratulated her at her home.

The local community is going all out to celebrate Puja's achievement, with a victory procession organized in her honor. Janakpur Bolts, a team in the Nepal Premier League, appointed her as their 'Face of the Bolts' and handed over a cash amount of Rs 50,000.

Puja's success has also inspired her hometown, prompting local levels, provincial government, and social organizations to take note. In an interview, she stressed the need for authorities to prioritize girls and women in sports, pushing for a shift towards "Beti Khelau" (Empower daughters toward sports).

As Puja moves on to captaining Nepal's U-19 team in the Asia Cup from December 15 this year and the World Cup in January 2025, Malaysia, fans across the nation eagerly await her next move.

"We are proud of our young cricketer and wish her the best for her future endeavors," said a local youth, who had initially been unaware of Puja's accomplishments. "Her determination and talent have brought honor to our country."
