Prostate Cancer: Know the Warning Signs and Risk Factors to Shield Your Health
As November marks Men's Health Month, awareness about crucial health issues affecting men is being highlighted, including prostate cancer. While it predominantly affects men over 50, early warning signs and risk factors can start appearing as early as 40.
According to Dr. Santoshi Janardan Nagaonkar, Director of Urology, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, proactive awareness initiated earlier in life can lead to significant differences in early detection and treatment outcomes.
Key indicators of a heightened risk of developing prostate cancer include:
- A family history of prostate cancer
- Sudden changes in urination patterns, such as frequent urination or difficulty in starting/stoping the flow
- Unexpected weight loss accompanied by fatigue
- Persistent lower back, hip, or pelvic pain that remains unexplained
- Pelvic pain, which can be a symptom of chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS)
Regular check-ups and screenings, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, are essential for those at higher risk. The Indian medical community recommends annual PSA screening for men with a strong family history of prostate cancer after their 40th birthday.
"It's crucial to encourage open conversations about men's health and prioritize regular urology assessments," Dr. Nagaonkar emphasized. "Being informed and vigilant can be the difference between early detection and treatment, ultimately saving lives."
As Men's Health Month comes to a close, it's essential to remember that taking proactive steps towards your health is vital. Early interventions, comprehensive screenings, and family awareness can safeguard not only one's own well-being but also that of loved ones.
