Poverty Plagues Region Rich in Minerals: Indian Archbishop Speaks Out
MUMBAI, India – In a stark contrast to its natural wealth, the Indian state of Jharkhand remains plagued by poverty, with Archishop Vincent Aind speaking out on the World Day of the Poor about the economic and social struggles faced by its people.
Archbishop Aind, who covers an area rich in minerals and forest under his archdiocese in Ranchi, explained that despite the region's natural riches, a majority of its citizens are poor. This year's theme for the 8th World Day of the Poor is "The prayer of the poor rises up to God" (Sirach 21:5), which Archishop Aind hopes will shed light on the various forms of poverty.
"There are many in abject poverty as a consequence of lacking in resources," Aind said, highlighting the need for education, economic opportunities, and spiritual growth. "There are poor also in the sense of lacking in courage to try different ways of cultivating and lacking in courage to try changing different modes and means of utilising their resources."
Aid emphasized that poverty is not limited to economic struggles alone but can manifest in multiple forms, including a lack of education, motivation, and even spiritual connection.
The archbishop also shed light on the plight of India's indigenous Tribals and "Dalits," who often face challenges such as identity verification issues making it difficult for them to access basic services like banking and legal residence. Aind called upon his community to "wake up" and strive for change.
India's Christian population, comprising roughly 28 million people, predominantly made up of Tribals and Dalits, sees Christianity as a means of emancipation and social improvement. However, the region remains plagued by poverty, with many struggling to rise above their economic and social challenges.
As the world celebrates World Day of the Poor, Archishop Aind's words serve as a stark reminder that despite natural wealth and riches, there are still numerous voices of poverty that require attention, support, and solace.
