PM Praised Election Commission for Using Technology to Strengthen People's Power

In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday, saying it has effectively use its power to strengthen people's power and demonstrate its commitment to a fair polling process.

Modi made these remarks in his monthly 'Mann ki Baat' broadcast, ahead of the EC's foundation day on January 25, which is celebrated as National Voters' Day. This comes amidst frequent criticism from opposition parties accusing it of having a pro-BJP bias.

The EC has modernized and strengthened the election process multiple times, with Prime Minister Modi asserting its efforts to improve the democratic process.

"India uses the power of technology to strengthen our people's power," he said, urging citizens to participate in the polling process in large numbers to be part of the democratic machinery. This statement is seen as an endorsement of the widely used Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which have been a subject of controversy amidst allegations of irregularities.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India's trajectory as a democracy, noting that doubts cast on the country's viability after its independence were proved wrong. "India is the mother of democracy," he said.

Interestingly, the programme took place on this third Sunday of the month due to next Sunday being Republic Day, according to the Prime Minister.

To demonstrate the values promoted by India's founding members, including Rajendra Prasad (Chairman), Bhimrao Ambedkar and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, short audio clips were played in the broadcast.

Speaking about the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, Prime Minister Modi pointed out that people of various castes and regions have come together. "There is no discrimination whatsoever," he added.

The remarks may be seen as an attempt to shift perceptions of the EC amidst widespread criticism from opposition parties.
