PM Narendra Modi to Receive Dominica Award of Honour from Caribbean Nation
NEW DELHI: In a significant recognition of India's commitment to cooperation with small-island developing states (SIDS) in the Caribbean, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be awarded the Dominica Award of Honour, the highest national honour bestowed by the Commonwealth of Dominica.
The award, which will be presented during the upcoming India-Caricom Summit scheduled to take place in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21, is in recognition of Modi's contributions to Dominica during the Covid-19 pandemic and his dedication to strengthening ties with the Caribbean nation.
In a statement, Foreign Ministry officials noted that Prime Minister Modi supplied Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in February 2021, enabling the small island nation to provide support to its Caribbean neighbours.
"Dominica's highest national honours as a symbol of gratitude for his support and as a reflection of our strong ties between our countries," Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica stated. "Prime Minister Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during our time of need amid global health crisis."
As part of the India-Caricom Summit, which will feature leaders from 15 member states and five associate member states of the Caricom community, Prime Minister Modi will co-chair the summit alongside his Grenadian counterpart.
This is only the second Summit between India and Caricom, with a previous one held in 2019 on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
