PGI's Innovative 'Project Sarathi' Replicates Success Across 750 Hospitals Nationwide

Chandigarh, December 15, 2024: The innovative initiative of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, "Project Sarathi", has taken a giant leap with its replication in more than 750 hospitals across the country. Recognized by both Standing Finance Committee and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the project has effectively enhanced patient care and empowered students through volunteer-based assistance.

First initiated in May this year under the patronage of Dr Vivek Lal, Director PGI, "Project Sarathi" mobilizes National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers to provide essential patient services, thereby augmenting healthcare delivery. Deputy Director (Administration), PGI, Pankaj Rai, conceptualized this project after discovering a similar model in Detroit, USA, during his visit.

In an interview with Alayaran.com, Rai revealed that Meeta Rajivlochan, Secretary of Youth Services and Sports, Government of India, visited PGI last September to witness the implementation of "Project Sarathi" at one of our hospitals. Impressed by its findings, she greenlit the project's expansion across India, which now stands incorporated in 750 hospitals.

Reflecting on how "Project Sarathi" was conceptualized, Rai shared that, “We began with a pilot phase launched last April featuring just 22 volunteers at Government Polytechnic College for Women, Chandigarh. Since then, our aim has been to create a system where young volunteers can contribute their energies towards the betterment of healthcare."
