Paz Vega's Directorial Debut 'Rita' Secures Key Market Sales

Locarno World Premiere Film Sells to U.K., Ireland, and India

Los Angeles, CA - "Rita," the directorial debut of acclaimed Spanish actress Paz Vega, has begun to make waves in the international film market following its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in August. The film, which also marks Vega's screenwriting debut, has now secured its first significant market sales following its showcase at the American Film Market.

Filmax, the sales company handling "Rita," has finalized deals with Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland rights, and with BookMyShow for the Indian market. Ivan Díaz, head of international at Filmax, expressed optimism about further sales, noting the film's growing popularity in film festivals around the globe.

"Rita" has already charmed audiences at its U.S. premiere in Chicago, its Spanish debut in Valladolid, and is set to screen at the Tallinn, Seville, and Huelva festivals. The film, deeply personal for Vega, draws from her own childhood experiences in Triana, Sevilla, focusing on a young girl named Rita navigating a summer filled with joy but shadowed by domestic turmoil in 1984.

The narrative captures the essence of a working-class upbringing with acute attention to period authenticity, from the sounds of a purring fan to the tactile experiences of childhood. Vega herself stars as Mari, Rita's mother, in a story that shifts perspective through the eyes of young Rita, portrayed by the critically acclaimed Sofía Allepuz.

Max Hart, acquisitions and development executive at Signature Entertainment, praised Vega's directorial prowess, stating, “‘Rita’ blew us away with its incredible performances and subtle power, marking a truly impressive directorial debut from the iconic Paz Vega."

"Rita" not only showcases Vega's multifaceted talents but also challenges traditional market expectations, particularly in regions like the U.K. and Ireland, where Spanish dramas often face stiff competition. "The U.K. and Ireland market has traditionally been a hard sale for Spanish dramas, so this deal really is testimony to Paz Vega’s first outing as a director," Díaz added.

Following a successful screening at Tallinn, "Rita" is slated for a high-profile slot at the Seville European Film Festival this Sunday evening. Additionally, Vega will receive the prestigious Premio Luz at the upcoming Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival, celebrating her contributions to cinema.

As "Rita" continues its festival circuit, its sales and critical acclaim underscore Paz Vega's emerging stature not just as an actress, but as a significant voice in film direction and storytelling.
