Paz Vega's Directorial Debut 'Rita' Secures Key Market Sales

LOS ANGELES - The much-anticipated film "Rita," marking the directorial debut of acclaimed Spanish actress Paz Vega, has started making waves in international film markets following its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival this August. The movie has already secured significant distribution deals, showcasing its growing appeal among global audiences.
Sales company Filmax has successfully closed deals for the UK and Ireland with Signature Entertainment, known for distributing films like "The New Boy" and "Unicorns." Additionally, rights for India have been acquired by BookMyShow, with more deals expected soon, according to Ivan Díaz, head of international at Filmax.
"Rita," which also boasts Vega's scriptwriting talents, is inspired by her own childhood in Triana, Sevilla. The film paints a vivid picture of 1984 Seville through the eyes of seven-year-old Rita, capturing both the joys and the darker shadows of her life. Vega herself stars as Rita's mother, Mari, in a narrative that delves deep into themes of domestic violence and patriarchal oppression.
The film has been making rounds in the festival circuit, with its U.S. premiere in Chicago, and subsequent screenings in Valladolid, Tallinn, Seville, and soon at the Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival where Vega will receive the prestigious Premio Luz award.
The authenticity of the period setting, combined with Vega's sensitive direction, has been praised by critics. "Rita captures the essence of a bygone era with a child's perspective, making it both a personal and universal tale," commented Max Hart, acquisitions & development executive at Signature Entertainment, who expressed excitement over bringing "Rita" to UK and Irish audiences.
Ivan Díaz highlighted the significance of the UK and Ireland deal, stating, "The U.K. and Ireland market has traditionally been a hard sale for Spanish dramas, so this deal really is testimony to Paz Vega’s first outing as a director."
